Jacques Barzun

One of my favorite authors and intellectuals turned 101 years old last weekend. His tour de force, From Dawn to Decadence, is probably the most intellectually awakening and informative book that I have ever read about western cultural history. I recommend it very highly especially if you you think that your liberal arts knowledge has begun to recede into the mists of time or has been battered by the constant barrage of inanity and propaganda issued by the philistine media - constantly telling us daily that our civilization is the apogee of all human culture. I have attached an interview of Jacques with public television interviewer, Charlie Rose from earlier in this decade. He writes that western civilization has entered into a period of decadence that can be evidenced by a casual observation by any lucid and reasonable person. However, he is not a pessimist and believes that from the ashes a more vibrant and moral order will emerge. Let's pray that he is right.
